19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 championships have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback Medvedev won his initial trophy for 882 days with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

Medvedev, a ex- top-ranked player, has experienced a torrid year, winning just one match at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the American major.

The player's unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his service game in particular - caused him falling of the elite rankings and eventually separating with former coach Cervara.

Presently working with his coach and Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually advanced in the last few weeks - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over opponent Corentin Moutet.

This marks his maiden trophy since the Rome competition and first on a hard surface since March of the previous year.

The win also means he has secured 21 titles at twenty-one different events.

"It's the first time I have attended a event with my two daughters together, so to get a championship is especially meaningful," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I got when my older daughter her name was born was for her."

Medvedev, the former major winner, had failed in his previous six championship matches, featuring in that event previously this season.

The player's defensive strategy and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had prompted commentators to question if his ability to perform at the top level was over.

But the athlete has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, attempting to approach the net and compete assertively, reinforced by an improved serve.

He recovered from a deficit in the opening set against the tricky opponent, securing 4 of the final five exchanges to go ahead.

The competitors exchanged break points in the second set before Moutet, attempting for his maiden tour victory, gained dominance to push for a third set.

Moutet rescued 4 initial opportunities in a close third set before the champion broke to fifteen to close out the victory.

Suitably, the winner earned the win with a shot at the net area, with Moutet unable to control a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
